ORIENTATION BEGINS FOR CITY’S YOUTH @ WORK PROGRAM
(6/17/2009) NEW HAVEN-The City’s Youth @ Work summer program kicked-off this week with an orientation that will prepare approximately 1,200 youths for five week apprenticeships in various public and private agencies throughout the City.
“This is a great opportunity for our City’s youth,” said Mayor DeStefano. “Throughout the next five weeks, these young people will learn professional skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. This is also a great opportunity for community members to serve as mentors by hosting Youth @ Work participants.”
The summer Youth @ Work program serves City residents 14 to 24 years old. Last year, the summer program only served youths under 19 years old; however, the age limit has been extended as a result of additional stimulus funding.
Before beginning their first day of work, youths will participate in the week long orientation. This training program teaches financial literacy, communication skills, professionalism, conflict resolution, office etiquette and workplace conduct. Participants will then use these skills as they begin working at 85 worksites throughout the City.
